Deep Eddy Mural
by Hannah Milford, MA, LPC, LCDC on July 9th, 2013

Deep Eddy Pool is the oldest swimming pool in Texas, hosting everything from Native Americans to a diving horse.  Located there is the largest ceramic mosaic in Austin.  The Deep Eddy Mural is a community project that captures the pool's long and interesting history.

As a graduate student, I interned under a Registered Art Therapist and Art Director at the Deep Eddy Mural Project. I was able co-facilitate workshops helping children make ceramic tiles to donate to the mural. Children created original artwork with their names and inspirational sayings. The mural tuned out so beautifully!

While working on the Deep Eddy Mural, I learned about the healing power of art.  Art is a wonderful creative outlet for self-expression.  Expressive art therapy techniques can facilitate self-awareness and therapeutic healing.  Although expressive therapies differ from tradition therapy, its benefits are just as plentiful.
